Is your customer team fit for the future?

Is your customer team fit for the future?

The latest Advantage Group survey has landed in inboxes across the industry, and the headline reading is broadly positive. Suppliers are generally holding their own on the basics, communication is reasonable and shelf availability updates are timely. The individuals doing the work are well regarded.

But underneath those scores, a more uncomfortable question is starting to surface: how future-fit are supplier customer teams, really?

Brilliant basics are not enough anymore

Operational effectiveness keeps the relationship intact. It does not build the kind of partnership that drives category growth, unlocks joint investment, or creates lasting competitive advantage.

Customers are looking beyond the basics. They want suppliers who operate as genuine business partners, bringing fresh ideas, adapting quickly to market and technology shifts, and understanding the customer’s business as well as their own.

Top Tier suppliers outperform by +28%, according to Advantage Group. The commercial case for making this shift is clear.

The mindset shift that changes everything

The old question was ‘how can we grow our business through the customer?’

The question that wins today is ‘what would Joint Value Creation look like if we were one business?’.

That shift sounds subtle, but the operational and commercial implications are significant. It involves moving from annual operating plans focused on short-term tactics to always-on joint business plans anchored in a longer-term mutual growth agenda; replacing a sell-in mindset with a sell-out one that puts the category and shopper first; and positioning customer teams to lead value creation across the value chain, rather than sales teams simply pitching a plan.

How Quantic’s Customer Accelerator programme delivers this

Over the past year, Quantic has worked with a number of FMCG clients through our Customer Accelerator programme to build stronger customer partnerships and deliver measurable commercial outcomes. Some have been major FMCG giants while others have been disruptors. Our approach is tailored to deliver on your teams’ needs and your business priorities.

This is not a workshop. Our subject matter experts embed directly into client teams, working to build a deep understanding of the customer, a multi-year customer growth plan and then clear execution drivers to outperform.

The results speak clearly

We’ve worked with clients looking to strengthen their partnerships with Tesco, Sainsbury’s and multiple European retailers, applying a category-first approach to identify meaningful incremental revenue and profit opportunities.

Those insights became the foundation for a joint strategy, developed collaboratively with the customer, and translated into clear, actionable growth plans with defined KPIs focused on shared value creation.
